What Does Cost to Own Mean?

What the "to own" price on a piece means, and how your credit and buyback add up to it.

Written by Croissant Support

When you look at a piece in the Croissant app, the first price you see is what it costs you to own. That's the retailer's price minus the credit you use at checkout, the credit you earn back, and what we'd pay if you sold the piece back to us.

Where you'll see it

In the app

A piece's page shows $X to own ①, with the retailer's price under it, for example $1,195 at Altuzarra. The cards in Saved items, Browsed and More like this show it too, above the piece's price ①. Tap Shop now ② to buy the piece from the retailer.

Two Croissant app screens: a piece's page where step 1 is the price to own with the retailer's price under it and step 2 is the Shop now button, and the sheet that opens from the price, listing the price, credit applied, credit back, buyback and cost to own, with a Croissant Premium comparison and Close and Get Premium buttons.

A saved item's card in the Croissant app, where step 1 is the price to own shown above the piece's price, next to the heart.

How it adds up

Tap $X to own to see the math. The sheet lists:

  1. Price: the retailer's price.

  2. Credit applied: a welcome offer or credit drop you can use on this piece at checkout. This line only shows when you have one.

  3. Credit back: the Croissant credit you earn back on what you pay. See How Croissant's 10% Credit Back Works.

  4. Buyback: what we'd pay you in credit if you sell the piece back to us. If a piece isn't eligible, the sheet says so. See Buybacks 101: What They Are and How to Get Them.

  5. Cost to own: the price minus your credit and buyback.

Cost to own isn't what you pay at checkout. At checkout you pay the price minus any credit applied. Your credit back lands in your Wallet afterward, and the buyback only counts if you sell the piece to us. Buyback values can change, so a piece's cost to own can change too.

If you aren't a Premium member, the sheet also shows what you'd earn back on that piece with Premium, with a Get Premium button. See What is Croissant Premium?.
